Welcome!

Start Your Journey Here.

A  very warm welcome to you! If you're new to all this MS diet stuff then this is a good place to start.

The aim of this page is to give you some clear guidance on how to start  managing your MS effectively.

I follow the Overcoming MS Seven Step Strategy which I have found to be the most helpful in holistically managing my MS. I have summarised the 7 steps for you here. I love these seven steps because they work together so effectively to give you the best chance of staying well with your MS.

You can read more about them on the OMS website

Here are some words of wisdom and encouragement from Prof. George Jelinek, the founder of OMS.

Before you start, Assess & Plan

Start with a quick evaluation of where you are right now, physically and emotionally. Then think about where you want to get to with your health.

YOU NEED A STARTING POINT.

You could be at the start of this journey, just struggling to come to terms with your diagnosis. On the other hand, you could be well into your quest and are looking to change the way you are managing your MS.

WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO GET YOU BACK TO A PLACE OF WELLNESS?

How do you want to manage your MS? What do you want your life to look like?

Set a few goals for yourself, such as:

  • I want to start eating healthily.
  • I want to start exercising a bit more.
  • I want more energy.
  • I want to get out of a hopeless mindset and get my MS under my control.
Ok, now you're ready to launch into the Seven Steps!

1. Start Eating Differently

Just do it!

Foods to Avoid & Enjoy

FOOD IS UNDOUBTEDLY YOUR MOST EFFECTIVE MEDICINE FOR MS.

If you are feeding your body the right nutrients, these will become tools that your body uses for healing. They also become weapons and protectors to stop further progression.

THE WRONG FOODS BLOCK THIS HEALING PROCESS.

The body can't restore itself when these nasties are in the way. They need to be completely avoided.

CHANGE IS HARD. It's a difficult change to make at first but in a few weeks in you will start to experience the benefits and achieve some of the goals you set for yourself. This will motivate you to keep going and establish some lifelong habits.

2. Vitamin D & Other Essential Supplements

A few well chosen supplements make all the difference and can really boost your nutrient intake.

3. Get Moving

Getting your circulation going and building muscle is of the utmost importance. Be gentle with your body and do as much as you're able to do. Even just stretching daily will make a huge difference.

Exercise

This way of treating MS is not just about eating differently but about changing your whole lifestyle which includes exercise, meditation, sleep and nurturing yourself.

IT'S A MULTIFACETED LIFESTYLE.

1. I LIKE TO MOVE IT. Find away to move a bit more. A way that suits you and your schedule. The body is so much more efficient at healing itself  when you're exercising regularly. Keep it gentle.

4. Meditation & Mindfulness

Make it a daily habit to invoke the Relaxation Response which is the opposite of the Stress Response. In this state, the body can heal and recover far more quickly. Even just five minutes of deep breathing can make a big difference to how you feel on a daily basis.

DEEP BREATHS. Meditation evokes the RELAXATION RESPONSE which puts the body in a position to repair damage and promote well-being. It also helps you to manage your stress more effectively.

ME-TIME. Find time to do something you love, every week. Nurture your soul with a good book, coffee with a friend or doing something creative.

REST UP. Good quality sleep is an essential part of the healing process. Go to bed early and have rest periods throughout the day. A five minute power nap. Eat as early as possible so that your food is fully digested when you sleep. The body has more energy to repair itself if it's not worrying about digestion.

5. Medication

Even though I advocate managing and treating MS naturally, I do feel that there is a place for the right medication. Attacking MS from two different angles, lifestyle and medication is an effective strategy.

Some people do very well managing their MS completely naturally, without medication. However, others feel that DMDs are an important safety net.

This is a very personal decision and we all have to do what works best for us and our bodies. I'd like to give you two pieces of advice about medication:

1. Definitely have a chat with your doctor but don't feel pressurised to start taking medication before you are ready.

2. Medication will never be a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. It's very important that you keep eating the right foods, exercising and managing your stress.

6. Prevent MS in Family Members

There is a small increased risk of your siblings, children and grandchildren developing MS. A few some simple strategies can be put into place to decrease the chance of this happening.

Here are four simple steps you can take to help prevent MS in your family members:

1. Give them Vit D3 regularly. My children love taking the vitamin D drops on their tongues. We give them 4000iu twice a week.

2. Make sure they are getting enough nutrients and are not eating too much processed and highly refined food. Advise them to keep meat and saturated fat to a minimum. As a family we have now all switched from dairy to coconut milk and my husband and children eat meat once a week.

3. We have family exercise times and encourage the children to be active and enjoy a sport. Something I'd love to introduce is a family mediation session!

4. We educate them on the dangers of smoking and excessive drinking and how unhealthy these habits are for the body.
